FACTS & MYTHS

FACT:

Proposition D is needed for West U’s children to have a modern library to use in the future.

FACT:

The opposition to Proposition D is the same group that was against the Edloe Street Pathway, a new fiscally responsible wastewater treatment plant project, and has fought against every new improvement to West U.

FACT:

The old buildings can be repurposed once the new facilities are completed.

MYTH:

Proposition D will raise your property taxes significantly. This is false. The average tax bill impact is estimated to be $0.00910 per $100 taxable assessed value. If you are concerned about your property taxes, check the city’s calculator here on the city’s website: https://westutx.gov/1597/May-3-2025-Special-Election---Prop-D. West University has lower property taxes than Bellaire, the City of Houston, and Southside Place and is the envy of any surrounding municipalities. And it will still be extremely low and lower than those other places if Prop D passes.

MYTH:

Proposition D will hurt the build out of our wastewater plant. This is false. Our mayor and city council already approved a wastewater plant revamp at a much cheaper cost than was anticipated, saving the city millions. Construction is set to begin in April.

MYTH:

Proposition D is only a new Senior Center. This is false. The goal of Phase 2 is to create spaces for all ages to enjoy and access. The new library and community center will offer more common space, easier access and parking, and an additional multipurpose room facing Huffington Park for birthday party/event rentals.

MYTH:

The current library and Community Center do not need upgrading. This is false. Both facilities can be difficult to access for some folks. The current Community Building was built in 1941 with the Senior Center wing constructed in 1986. The facility received renovations in 2011 to improve areas of the parking lot, ADA access, space for volunteers, and storage needs. Built in 1961, our library is currently the oldest one in the Harris County Library System.

MYTH:

The old library and community building will be demolished and the oak trees removed to make way for a new City Hall
