ABOUT PHASE 2 & PROPOSITION D:

What is In Proposition D?

Proposition D allows West U voters to vote for the construction of a new, state-of-the art  community hub. The modern West U hub will include a 12,000 square foot community center and senior center as well as a 9,000 square foot library. The library will include basics like a meeting room, a modern workroom, a separate break room, and a book drop/shelving room. Bonus features would include a restroom in the children’s section, a content creator space for pre-teenagers and teenagers, a children’s programming space, and even plans for teen-friendly spaces to get them reading and off their screens.

The new library and community building will allow for better coordination of programming and for more intergenerational and multigenerational programs. The current community center is geared mainly toward seniors. The goal of Phase 2 is to create spaces for all ages to access and enjoy. The new community center will offer even more common space for seniors, easier access and parking, and an additional multipurpose room facing Huffington Park for birthday party/event rentals.

Why Does West U Need Proposition D?

The West University Library, built in 1961, is grossly inadequate and is presently unable to provide ample space, service, and technology for residents. Currently, the library is less than half the national average in size and does not have enough power to support both the coffee machine and microwave at the same time. It's the oldest library in the Harris County Public Library system. It is clear that the current space lacks power outlets, storage, and the up-to-date equipment that a modern library needs to function.

The Community Center, built in 1941 and expanded in 1986 to add space for Senior Services, lacks space for new programs for all ages, and has structural issues that cannot be easily remedied.
